These are two stunningly beautiful books by New Zealand artist and author Laura Shallcrass.
Hare and Ruru tells the story of a Hare that seeks peace and quiet but cannot find it in a noisy world. He looks all over the place for a calm quietness. A wise old owl, Ruru, helps him in his quest for quiet.
Hare ultimately feels better after doing three things:
• Talking to someone
• Focusing on breathing
• Connecting to nature
This gentle story is for anybody who suffers from noises or anxiety. The words and illustrations are gorgeous and soothing.
What Colour is The Sky is Laura's second book. It tells the story of Hare and Pihoihoi who try to discover the what colour the sky is. Every creature they come across sees it differently. This beautifully illustrated picture book for young children explores the wonder of nature and shows the importance of listening and respecting other opinions, even when we see things differently.
We particularly liked the fascinating learning notes in the back which explain why everyone sees the sky as a different colour. Birds, frogs, hedgehogs, snails and mice all have different ways of seeing and perceiving colour. "fun fact- frogs use their eye balls to push food down their throats ...that's why they blink when they swallow!"
They make a lovely gift for a baby, toddler or child. And we've had adults buy them because they are so exquisitely illustrated.
Both are 32-page hardcover books, measuring approx 20.5 x 29cm.
Hare and Ruru was the winner of the 2021 NZ Childrens Book Award for Best Illustration. We are sure What Colour is the Sky will win too!
